On 22 October 2021, Barry Gardiner MP introduced a Private Members Bill to better regulate the practice of Fire and Rehire. Despite support from across the House, the government decided to talk out the Bill and promised to bring forward their own proposals. Critically they did not vote against it.

Over 20 unions, the TUC and the Institute of Employment Rights backed the campaign and it made major advances. It raised public awareness with coverage in national press, radio stations and TV networks. Many Conservative MPs agreed publicly and privately that something needs to be done to resolve the problem, but ministers did not want a Labour bill to achieve change.

Last night, myself and Manchester Gorton CLP hosted Barry Gardiner MP, the sponsor of the Stop Fire and Rehire Bill, for a special screening of the documentary about the campaign. We were also joined by guest speakers from Unite and GMB to share their experiences of standing up for workers who are having to fight against this heinous activity. The recent scandal with P&O has proven more than ever why we urgently need to outlaw Fire and Rehire and continue campaigning for better worker rights.

I was delighted to see so many CLP members and councillors in attendance last night. A huge thank you to everyone who came along!
