Afzal Khan and Ed Miliband at the Labour Climate and Environment Forum

This year has started off busy with environmental causes.

In Parliament I started the year attending the launch of the Labour Climate and Environment Forum. This independent organisation is working to support the labour movement in transitioning to zero pollution, zero waste, and overall a greener, more sustainable country. I was proud to have attended with Shadow Climate Change and Net Zero Secretary, Ed Miliband.

I attended the drop-in event on the Clean Air Bill, a Bill which I believe is very important. Clean, breathable air is a human right and I am proud the Labour Party is supporting clean air for all.

I questioned the a Government Minister at DEFRA questions about raw sewage still being dumped both in waterways in Manchester Gorton. Raw sewage being dumped is a serious concern and the Government must prioritised cleaning up our waterways.

I am delighted to have been re-elected as a Vice Chair of the APPG on Parks and Green Spaces. These spaces are crucial for our mental and physical health and I will do all I can to support parks in Manchester, Gorton.

I had the opportunity to speak in the Westminster Hall Debate on bee-killing pesticide which the Government has yet again approved for use. These pesticides kill bees and other pollinators, which are vital for our ecosystem. You can see my full intervention here.

I attended the Green Heart Hero Awards hosted in Parliament by The Climate Coalition. I was honoured that St Margaret’s Primary School had been nominated for an award due to their hard work and dedication to the climate and environment. Although they did not win, the work staff and students all do is inspiring and I am proud to have

I spoke in the Energy Oral Questions, questioning the Secretary on the Government’s delays using all green energy options available which you can watch here.

In the constituency, I attended the launch of the film by Let’s Talk Clean Air Whalley Range. The film acknowledges the difficulties many have changing their habits. You can watch the film here.

I also planted trees with The Orchard Project at the British Muslim Heritage Centre. These heritage fruit trees and fruit bushes will not only provide fruit in years to come, but they are important to bees, pollinators, and wildlife.

I’m also delighted I could meet with various environmental organisations to hear about their work and how I can support them further.
