Afzal Khan MP at the APPG for the Environment event

This month, I have had an opportunity to attend various events surrounding the topic of the environment, climate change, and nature.

We are in the midst of a climate emergency – with the temperature of the planet increasing rapidly, there are a number of concerns that must be addressed quickly to mitigate the consequences.

Firstly, I was elected as a Vice Chair for the Net Zero APPG. I was delighted to join this Group and work towards accelerating climate policy change, promote zero carbon solutions, support clean growth technology and further the UK’s commitment to deliver a net zero carbon economy.

I also had the opportunity to attend the APPG for the Environment event ‘Standing up for a Nature Positive World’. This event saw fantastic cross-party turn out to discuss the importance of nature being at the centre of the upcoming COP15 biodiversity summit. I was also pleased to hear my colleague Alex Sobel MP discuss the importance of human rights and environmental rights together, as they are intertwined and we must work on these issues together.

It was the inaugural meeting for the APPG on the Ocean, which I had the opportunity to attend. I look forward to being a part of this APPG to discuss the importance of our planet, focusing specifically on what we can do for our oceans and marine life.

Lastly, I submitted many written questions regarding the environment and climate action. You can read the questions here.

I look forward to doing even more work for our planet in June and throughout the summer. If you know of any environmental events taking place in Manchester Gorton, please do send me an email with details.
