Our community is diverse, and I am proud that in Manchester, over 200 languages are spoken. Therefore, international issues are regularly brought to my attention. With a decades long track record of campaigning for Palestinian justice, I have also done extensive work on this in this Parliament.

You can read more about some of my work on this area below:

  • On Palestine, I have frequently met with the Foreign Secretary and the Middle East Minister to ensure that plans for a lasting ceasefire remain at the heart of our Foreign Policy.
  • I have held meetings with the Palestinian Ambassador and the Ambassadors of Arab Nations to discuss developments in Gaza.
  • I have written to the Foreign Secretary on issues such as President Trump’s statements, concern for the civilian boat ‘Madleen’, and calls for a full arms embargo.
  • I have also raised this issue in the Chamber multiple times and called for the UK to recognise the State of Palestine, and uphold our international humanitarian commitments.

You can track my continued work on this issue on my website.

  • This year, I was honoured to be appointed as the Government’s Trade Envoy to Türkiye.
  • This role has allowed me to make various visits on behalf of the UK Government to track the growing trade between the two countries.
  • I have met with the Turkish Ambassador many times, and welcomed him, along with various Ministers from the Turkish Parliament to Westminster.
  • I also held a ‘Taste of Türkiye’ event in Parliament where over 300 guests joined— including MPs, Peers, diplomats, and business leaders — to celebrate Türkiye’s rich culinary heritage and the growing UK–Türkiye trade relationship.

  • I have continued to advocate for a free, secure and independent Kashmir. I presented a petition to the Prime Minister calling for a free Kashmir, and expressed my horror regarding recent attacks in Kashmir in the Chamber.

  • As part of my role in the Joint Committee on Human Rights, we have published an inquiry on the role of forced labour in UK supply chains. I questioned various figures, including asking the Anti-Slavery Commissioner about the potential of introducing human rights due diligence legislation.
  • The Committee is also completing our inquiry into transnational repression in the UK, and I have collected evidence from various witnesses to ascertain the current legal protections for victims of transnational repression.
