Many constituents have written to me to share their views on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill in recent weeks to share their views. I know this is a deeply personal issue and emotive, so I want to thank everyone who shared their views and experiences with me on this topic.

I was unable to be at the vote today due to commitments in the constituency. But, as you know, the Bill has passed the Second Reading and now will start the legislative process. It passed with 330 votes to 275 votes against.

I do have concerns about the Bill, which I have been considering while hearing the personal stories from constituents, campaigners, and activists. This includes the argument of a slippery slope, coercion, and the current condition of our NHS and justice system.

As the Bill moves forward, I believe it is crucial that we do not allow assisted dying to replace good, high quality palliative care, as well as ensuring the most stringent safeguards are in place. I will continue to follow the Bill’s progress closely.
