The climate crisis is the most significant long-term threat we are facing and will undoubtedly impact our young people’s futures unless we act now.
The last Conservative Government consistently failed to prioritise addressing the climate crisis. The Tories simply refused to invest in renewable energy, help working people deal with soaring energy bills, and tackle air pollution.
We now have a Labour government who did more in 14 days than the Tories did in 14 years.
I am incredibly proud to support a Labour government that recognise the urgency of tackling climate issues and is already demonstrating leadership in expediting our just transition to a clean energy future.
In the first week of Government, the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, has announced:
- An end to the 9 year onshore wind ban;
- His mission for clean power by 2030, which will cut bills and make Britain energy independent;
- And that the National Wealth Fund will help create thousands of jobs in clean energy industries.
Air pollution is a huge priority for me as an MP. Greater Manchester has some of the highest levels of air pollution in the country with over 100 people dying a year directly from toxic air, as well as babies, pregnant women, elderly people, and people suffering from respiratory illnesses most at risk.
In Greater Manchester, levels of NO2 are now 1.3 times the current UK legal limit, and over 5 times the World Health Organisation limit. It is clear we need to take urgent action in order to bring those levels down.
I will continue to champion this issue in Parliament by working closely with Ministers and I will continue to support local schools, councillors, and activists in advocating for climate action in the community.
I know this is also an important issue for the Government and I am looking forward to hearing more about how we will tackle the air pollution health emergency and make it a legal right for everyone to breathe clean air.
