Afzal Khan at roundtable discussion with Refresh Britain and Labour Climate and Environment Forum

I was pleased to have hosted a pivotal roundtable discussion addressing the critical issue of air quality in the UK with Labour Climate and Environment Forum and Refresh Britain.

The situation is dire, with the UK consistently exceeding legal limits of nitrogen dioxide. In Manchester, we face some of the worst air pollution levels in the country, slashing life expectancy by an average of six months.

During the roundtable, I reiterated Labour’s commitment to combat air pollution. We are set to introduce a transformative Clear Air Act, aligning with WHO guidelines, and establishing a legal right for citizens to breathe clean air.

The Tory Government’s failure to address this is critical issue is problematic. Their poor approach to air quality regulation and insufficient commitments to environmental justice only worsen, not just my constituents ability to breathe clean air, but the climate crisis at large.

The health and well-being of my constituents will always be a priority of mine. The time for action is now, and the Labour Party and I stand ready to prioritise the health and future of our communities.
