This week we’ve been celebrating the TUC’s #HeartUnions week – a chance to tell the story about why trade unions are vital for everyone at work.
No-one could have foreseen the twin challenges of the global pandemic and consequent recession. As a proud trade union member, I’m so impressed with the way the trade union movement has responded – stepping up to fight the pandemic, demanding action to protect jobs and supporting their members through thick and thin.
Over the last year trade unions have demonstrated their relevance and effectiveness like never before. Throughout this past week I’ve been using #HeartUnions to say loudly and proudly: UNIONS ARE BRILLIANT.
Below is an overview of just a small amount of the incredible campaigning and organising being done by trade unions here in Manchester and across the UK.
There’s a union out there for everyone – JOIN ONE TODAY!
From standing up for workers at Amazon and Asda, to calling out shameful fire and re-hire tactics at British Gas, GMB are always on the side of the workers – giving their members a strong voice at work. I have supported GMB campaigns throughout my political career and I’m proud to be a GMB member.
I’ve joined Unite North West and Unite Community members on the picket line countless times. With Unite’s support, workers can make sure they are treated fairly by their employer. From bus drivers to bank employees – Unite have got your back.
With more than a million members, UNISON is the UK’s largest union. Challenging discrimination and winning equality is at the heart of every UNISON campaign, from #FairPay4Care to #PayUpNow. I’m always proud to support UNISON members.
The UCU support higher education workers in their fight for fair pay, secure contracts, reasonable workloads and decent pensions. I’ve worked closely with the University of Manchester UCU branch and I’m always amazed at their dedication to their members!
