This week, Afzal Khan MP has committed to champion, support and protect green spaces by signing up to the Parks Protector Pledge.

Local parks and green spaces have been a vital lifeline for everyone over the last two years. The Pledge sets out how elected representatives can work to champion, support and protect green spaces for good both locally and nationally. Elected policymakers have an important role to play in the future of our parks and green spaces, and Fields in Trust will work with Pledging policymakers to support them in delivering on the commitment they have made to their constituents.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, green spaces helped people stay physically and mentally well; by providing places to move, relax, run and play. They are also an important tool in driving social cohesion, combatting loneliness, building community spirit and benefiting the environment.

Commenting, Afzal Khan MP said, “I’m delighted to sign-up to support the six aims of the Parks Protector Pledge. There is overwhelming evidence that parks and green spaces contribute to the health and wellbeing of all communities.

“I’m committed to championing all of Manchester Gorton’s green spaces and ensuring that they are protected for use by all.”

Afzal was also elected Vice Chair of the APPG on Parks and Green Spaces this week. Through bringing together key stakeholders from local authorities to Parliamentarians, the group addresses the most urgent issues affecting our green spaces, including but not limited to funding, inequality of access to nature, climate change, biodiversity and the impact they have on the nation’s health and wellbeing.
