On 18th September 2014, a Scottish referendum for independence was held. Labour supported the ‘Better Together’ Campaign for various reasons. You can Douglas Alexander’s speech on the Scottish vote here.
You can also see Gordon Brown’s epic speech for Union below:
A groups of Labour MEPs, including myself, joined the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, and a hundred Labour MPS in Scotland to help campaign for the No Vote.
In the end, Scotland voted to stay with the UK. Despite this, however, the referendum has given us much to reflect on. We must work for a better union by ensuring better distribution of resources and through supporting Scotland and other non-English parts of the UK to develop and move forward the best they can.
